Meet Our Doctors


 

Dr. Michael J. Burns

Dr. Burns completed his under-graduate education at the University in Lincoln, NE, and the University of Denver. He graduated from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in 1972.


Dr. Burns is a diplomate of the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Foot Surgeons, the American College of Foot Orthopedists, and the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine.


He has written numerous scientific papers and given hundreds of scientific presentations regarding foot surgery and biomechanics both nationally and internationally. He continues to be an active speaker for professional groups and organizations. When free time permits, Dr. Burns likes to pursue his interests in archaeology, flying, golf, kayaking and cross-country skiing.

Dr. Kate Johnson
Kate Johnson, DPM

Dr. Johnson completed her undergraduate work in Cellular, Molecular and Developmental Biology at the University of Washington in Seattle. At this time she was awarded the Howard Hughes Research Intern Award and her subsequent work focused on the cell cycle and muscular dystrophy. In addition, she performed newborn hearing and phenylketonuria tests and worked as a phlebotomist through college. Dr. Johnson began her medical studies at William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. During this time she received two Distinguished Scholar Scholarships and graduated with her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine Degree in the spring of 2011.

Following medical school, Dr. Johnson re-located to Phoenix, Arizona for a three year surgical residency at Maricopa Medical Center. This included a General Surgery Internship year during which time she had the privilege of training with Mayo Clinic plastic and hand surgeons, as well as with burn surgeons at the Arizona Burn Center (the second largest burn center in North America). Her comprehensive podiatric training incorporated extensive work in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery, including flatfoot and cavus reconstruction and traumatic injury correction, diabetic limb salvage, wound and burn care, sports medicine, lower extremity biomechanics and pediatrics.


Dr. Johnson is delighted to have the opportunity to join the remarkable team of doctors at A Step Ahead Foot and Ankle Center. Her goals are to practice inclusive and personalized treatment for a wide variety of foot and ankle problems. She uses evidence-based medicine to educate and involve her patients and believes their participation and goals are vital to creating an appropriate treatment plan.

 

Dr. Johnson is a prodigious reader and has an avid interest in history, languages and folk music. She also loves traveling and exploring the outdoors. She spends much of her free time gardening, kayaking, climbing, caving and hiking in the mountains with her husband and three dogs.

Dr. Chad M. Knutsen

Dr. Chad Knutsen grew up in Eastern Iowa. He completed his undergraduate degree at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1989. He graduated from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, located in Chicago, Illinois in 1993. Dr. Knutsen completed a one year intership and a two year surgical residency at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago.

Dr. Knutsen is a member of the Colorado Podiatric Medical Association and the American Podiatric Medical Association. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and is a Fellow in the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.


He enjoys spending time with his family, his wife Victoria, two daughters Bria and Tori and son Mitchell. Dr. Knutsen's recreational activities include hiking, golf, snow boarding, softball and anything outdoors that can include his two Golden Retrievers.

Dr. Robert C. Schulte

Dr. Robert Schulte is a Colorado native who grew up on the eastern plains of Colorado in a small ranching and farming community. He stayed in Colorado and completed his undergraduate work at Colorado State University. He graduated from Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, Illinois in 1993. Dr. Schulte then completed a two year surgical residency at Loretto Hospital and Hugar Surgery Center in Chicago.


Dr. Schulte is a member of the Colorado Podiatric Medical Association and the American Podiatric Medical Association. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and is a Fellow in the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.


Dr. Schulte enjoys golf, skiing, hiking and various other outdoor activities.
